Zubimendi Reveals Why He Chose Arsenal Over Liverpool

Arsenal supporters are set to witness new midfield signing Martin Zubimendi's debut this Wednesday - marking the culmination of a year-long pursuit by the Gunners to secure the Spanish international.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder, widely regarded as one of Europe's finest in his position, made his first appearance for Arsenal in a closed-door friendly against Watford last weekend. His first public outing since completing a £60 million transfer from Real Sociedad is expected against AC Milan in Singapore.
Strategic Acquisition
Zubimendi arrives with impressive credentials, having played a pivotal role in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph over England and previously rejecting interest from Liverpool. Arsenal's move for the midfielder was part of a carefully orchestrated plan that also included the signing of Mikel Merino.
"It was a well-orchestrated plan by the club to secure both targets in consecutive years," explained manager Mikel Arteta. "We're fortunate both players were eager to join, and Real Sociedad proved excellent to deal with. This represents a positive outcome for all parties."
Arteta's Vision for Zubimendi
When questioned about Zubimendi's role, Arteta was unequivocal:
"He's a six [defensive midfielder]. I'm really excited. His ability to process information and implement instructions on the pitch is very impressive. I'm delighted to have him."
Zubimendi's Decision Process
The midfielder revealed the challenges he faced during last summer's transfer speculation:
"It wasn't an easy time. I had to determine if leaving Real Sociedad was right, and ultimately felt I had more to learn there. Staying proved the correct decision."
Zubimendi credits Arteta's meticulous approach as a key factor in his decision to join Arsenal:
"I've found one of Europe's top coaches. His attention to detail is remarkable, and I'm already learning so much. I'll aim to provide balance and passing quality while adapting to new demands."
Midfield Competition
With Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard joining established stars Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, competition for midfield places intensifies. Merino views this positively:
"The quality throughout our squad is unbelievable. This depth pushes everyone to improve while providing crucial rotation options for a long season."
Chasing Success
Zubimendi believes Arsenal's near-misses in recent seasons provide valuable lessons:
"Learning from previous campaigns will be crucial. Football often comes down to fine margins - we saw that in the Champions League against PSG. With fewer injuries and attention to detail, we can challenge for honors."
