Newcastle's striker hunt continues after Wolves rejection

Wolves have rejected a second bid from Newcastle for striker Jørgen Strand Larsen, who scored twice in Tuesday’s EFL Cup victory over West Ham.
The Magpies returned with a £55 million offer after their initial £50 million bid was turned down earlier this week.
Wolves are reluctant to sell the Norwegian international for two key reasons: the limited time remaining in the transfer window—which closes on Monday—makes finding a replacement difficult, and Strand Larsen’s contribution is seen as vital to the club’s Premier League survival hopes.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are seeking attacking reinforcements as Alexander Isak attempts to push through a move to Liverpool. The Swedish forward remains in a standoff with the Magpies and has not featured this season.
Strand Larsen, who completed a £23 million permanent move from Celta Vigo this summer, came off the bench to score a late brace in Wolves’ dramatic 3–2 win against West Ham.
Despite wanting to keep the forward, Wolves boss Vitor Pereira did not completely rule out a sale:
“Football is football and every player has a price, even Messi or Ronaldo. I understand the business, but he is very important to us. We will see what happens.”
“If it’s my decision, of course he stays. He is a very important player.”
Newcastle represents an attractive option for Strand Larsen, who netted 14 Premier League goals last season. However, Pereira believes the 25-year-old will not force an exit:
“I know a lot of players in this situation who ask not to play—but he wants to play every time. He wants to help the team.”
“I know him very well. He will never force a move. Of course, football is unpredictable, but I want to keep our best players.”
Newcastle’s Transfer Dilemma: How Far Will They Go?
Newcastle’s pursuit of Strand Larsen stems from the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s future. As the Swede angles for a move to Liverpool, the Magpies are scrambling for alternatives in the final days of the window.
The club has also shown interest in Porto’s Samu Aghehowa but are hesitant to meet the £60 million valuation for the 21-year-old, who scored 27 goals last season.
Similarly, a move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa has stalled after two bids—the latest worth £40 million—were rejected.
Like Brentford, Wolves are standing firm despite significant offers. With little time to find a replacement, and survival at stake, losing Strand Larsen could jeopardize their Premier League status.
The Norwegian was instrumental in Wolves’ survival last season, scoring 14 goals in 30 league starts after joining on loan from Celta Vigo.
Newcastle’s desperation, however, may lead them to overpay. The question remains: is Strand Larsen, signed for just £23 million this summer, worth more than £60 million? And will Newcastle’s circumstances force them to pay whatever it takes?
